Research emphasis:

In the area of critical care research I have evaluated oxygen administration techniques and the usefulness of transcutaneous oxygen and carbon dioxide monitoring in cats.  I have mentored small animal emergency and critical care residents in research projects, comparing unilateral and bilateral nasal oxygen administration and evaluating capnography for use in determination of proper nasoesphageal/nasogastric tube placement. In collaboration with the St. Louis Animal Emergency Clinics, I evaluated the prognostic value of plasma magnesium in dogs with parvoviral enteritis and co-investigated in another project utilizing dogs with canine parvovirus, this time to determine the role of organic acids in morbidity of that disease. I have been a co-investigator with the Cardiothoracic Surgery Division at the medical school in research involving a calf model to study left ventricular assist devices used in human critical cardiac care.  Regarding surgical research unrelated to critical care, I continue to maintain an interest in canine perineal hernia. Past and current investigations related to perineal hernia have included search for the ultimate cause of this condition; current efforts are directed at identifying the cause for decreased numbers of androgen receptors in the levator ani and coccygeus muscles of dogs with perineal hernia.
