Research emphasis:

Research projects have focused upon utilizing kinematic analysis to evaluate lameness in horses.  We are performing basic kinematic research and conducting clinical trials utilizing what we have learned. We have developed a telemeterized, accelerometer-based, alternative lameness evaluation technology that can be used in the overground field setting.  We are also investigating novel data mining approaches to data analysis to better accommodate the voluminous data output inherent in kinematic analysis (wavelet preprocessing, neural network classification). These novel data mining approaches may find utility in human sports medicine and rehabilitation fields. We are now collaborating to develop 3D animation program or software that will allow more intuitive analysis of hoof movement. When this sensing system and analysis are perfected, we plan to begin testing present widely accepted (but non-objectively tested) farrier techniques for the manipulation of hoof wall movement in horses. I also collaborate on a project using kinematic analysis to investigate upward fixation of the patella.
